Is it the wastegate opening up or is it the fuel cut off switch kicking in? You might be getting over boost from the wastegate diaphram begin torn. A new exhaust should help w/ lag, but not sure on gaining more boost. The US version were set about 7.5 PSi and the euro was 11. The fuel cutoff kicks in about 11 and the needle is just into the red. Without an intercooler I would be real careful running too high of boost. The 11 PSi setting was when a B head was available off the shielf. The Bs will run out of fuel before boost thus lean and burn piston/head...
