LJB, if the car still runs, take it to any run of the mill parts chain and have them hook their tester up to it. They will do it for free and will be able to tell which portion and part of Doug's list of possibilities happens to be the case with your car. I have too many alternators to count because I thought they had gone bad. I tested with a multi-tester and got funky reading but in the end, it has very seldom been the alternator that needed replacing. A wire was shorting out, the regulator was going south...what ever. Having a spare is never a bad idea but if you don't know what the actual problem is, changing in a new alty may not solve anything. Give it a shot.
