See if your chain can be tightened. Mine sounded like a cement mixer. My mechanic adjusted it from the top and it runs quiet and smooth.
Add this to my list for any 99 with points (not relevant for a 1979):
Crane Cams XR-700 electronic ignition. This is the single most important upgrade I made to the car for daily reliability.
