Dan , I was unable to find an earlier T/Chain adjustment procedure I wrote last year. The recent posts are close, in the meanwhile research found the original INSITU T/Chain adjustment bulletin from Saab dated march 1976: 1. Rotate the engine in the direction of normal rotation. Find point where lower side of chain, just off the cam sprocket, reveals the most play. Loosen the upper retaining screw of the curved guide plate. Press the guide against the chain to increase chain tension. Tighten the retaining screw. Rock the engine forward several times to determine that the chain tension is correct. SOME PLAY IS NECESSARY. Replace VC and run engine to determine that noise is now gone. MY only addition is for you to understand why rotating cam is necessary. The cam lobes and valve springs will try to rotate the cam itself at a certain points in its revolution. The KEY is to find the point to rotating the cam is to find there the cam presses itself forward and then clearly reveals the amount of slack in the lower side of the chain, in the chain adjustment. In the real world this is done with the car in third gear and push the car forward so engine turns in its normal direction ( plugs out will help)
