99 Windshield Tale of Woe

My 1978 SAAB 99GLE 5-door has been at a body shop for longer than anyone might believe-- it would be embarrassing to admit. At any rate, when it came time to put the windshield back in, it did not fit. Apparently, one side of the roof is slightly lower than the other side (probably the result of a prior poor repair job-- but how did the windshield fit then?). The body shop guy says that at some point in the 1978 model year SAAB changed windshields-- he does not know whether they got taller or shorter (top to bottem). He thinks the shorter windshield will fit in the rubber gasket, if he can find one. If he cannot find one, he says he can make the windshield fit (even the taller one) by glueing (sp?) it in, as is done with the new models, rather than by placing it in the rubber gasket. Some kind of molding, obviously not the original, would be placed around the windshield.
I am at a loss as to what my reaction should be to the whole affair. Any comments (or even questions) regarding any aspect of it would be appreciated. Thank you.
