What was the reason that the car was taken to the body shop and why was the windshield removed?? Something sounds mighty fishy to me and the body shop doesn't sound very competent.

I agree with the others that there has never been any change in the size of the windshield for a model 99. The only difference in SAAB windshields in 1978 was between the 99 and the 900, not within the 99 model run. I believe that the windshields are the same from the very first 1968 99's introduced in Sweden (1969 in the US) through the Model 90's (never imported here), which were the 99 shell redesigned with the upgraded 900 sedan trunk and built into the mid-80's. The 99 windshield should never be fitted without the proper rubber gasket and the trim that goes into the gasket (both still available from SAAB the last time I checked, though considerably more expensive than the glass shop estimated they would be). I doubt the glass could be fitted properly in the opening without the gasket as the opening is somewhat larger than the windshield. If the body shop can't do the job properly, take your car away from those butchers.

I have a friend in Connecticut who once worked for a body shop in East Hartford that acquired a '73 99EMS (in the rare Metallic Bronze color) that had been rolled with only 3,800 miles on it. Dick did the work on the car and he told me that he about ripped the floor out of it trying to pull the A-pillar on one side the last 1/4" into the correct position. The windshield absolutely would not fit with that pillar out of whack. He finally had to cut the pillar, pull things into the correct positions, and build up the resulting gap in the pillar with weld. When he finished with it, the car was straight. Dick told me that it was still in the possession of the body shop's owner when I left CT in mid-1989. It was in his garage and still only had about 3,800 miles on it. I don't know what has happened to it by now.
