...and picked the base 9-3. I agree with most of Chris K's post. What it finally came down to for me was I appreciated that storage options of the hatchback vs. the Passat sedan. Even though the Passat has a large trunk, there are just things you can haul in the 9-3 hatch with the back seat down that you can't get into the Passat's trunk. I briefly looked at the Passat wagon, but decided I preferred the looks of the 9-3 over the Passat wagon.
Another factor was I found a dealer willing to make a very good deal on the base 9-3 that made it on par (or a little better) with what I could get locally for a Passat GLS.
I noticed that the April Consumer Reports car issue showed the 2000 Passat repair history improved over the 1999 model, although it still got dinged for electrical problems. (Interestingly, the repair history of the 2000 9-3 was not listed due to insufficient data.)
A year later, I am still glad I bought the Saab, although if I had gone with the Passat, I think I would have enjoyed it also. It comes down to what you want...
