That's the same setup I looked at

Passat, then Passat Wagon, then the incentives (plus the look and the hatch - which I've already scratched on the garage door... grumble...) on the 9-3 made it a no-brainer.
VW irritated me a little too - the fact that they won't offer a stick on the AWD model and won't have the new Passat wagons out until the summer...
Thought about a GTI 1.8T - but wanted leather - and the quality on the Brazilian Golfs doesn't seem to be at par with the Wolfsburg-mfd Passat, let alone the Jettas (Hecho en Mexico - Puebla). Plus it was too small. Even toyed with a Eurovan Camper. But hate white (the only color), and hate automatics (the only choice). Plus, IMHO, it costs more (~$40K, I believe) than it's worth (depreciates like a rock).
So far, as I noted, the speakers in the 9-3 (and the tailgate swing height - sigh) are the only shortcomings that have struck (pun intended) me.
Now if I could just learn to park in R instead of first... ;)
Wes
