But I know what you mean. I have a friend who has a VW Jetta (96) and we had a 96 (replaced by our 2000 TDI). While the ONLY problem we ever had with the wife's Jetta was a rear window where the switch went south (sold it broken to a VW dealer - he didn't even care). I was very finicky about which dealer I took it to. The friend always takes his to a very (IMHO) disreputable dealer here in the local area (I've never heard anyone say anthing nice about their sales OR service). It's exactly what you said. He'd take it in because the exhaust was rattling. He gets it back with the exhaust rattling, and a check engine light that's always on. They tell him that's because it needs an O2 sensor. They replace it. Exhaust still rattles, and the #$@* light is still on. Spark plug wires (they reamed him on the $), another O2 sensor, new plugs... this dealer has tried everything - they're just, IMHO, incompetent. But again, we've never had problems at the two local VW dealers that I've discovered to be competent.
The beauty of having 7 local VW dealers (and even 2 Saab dealers) to choose from... :)
