I think this quote from the "SAAB 9-5: A personal Story" book says it all about platforms:
"The So-called platform (the floor) has somehow become an almost magical component in discussions around new cars. Actually,it is just the pressed pieces of steel which form the floor of the car, and which function as fastening points for engine, transmission, and front and rear sections, with steering and suspension. Those components, to a large degree, determine a car's characteristics. A platform, by it-self, has nothing to do with the car's performance, handling, or space....", and "...it is quite feasible to build cars with vastly different character on the same base."
It's just my opinion, but people get too hung up on platforms.
