Platforms are both expensive and invisible. As has been posted here on the site, GM is designing new platforms that cross several manufacturers. But they are designing flexiblity to allow for different wheelbase, width, length.
The real key is the quality of that platform. Then we have to see what the engineers put on that platform and how the designers tie it all together. VW and Audi use some of the same platforms but have distinctive styling and decent engineering.
GM started to die when in the 70's and 80's they not only consolidated platforms, they used crummy ones and made cookie cutter cars that blurred all distinctives.
Which of these paths will Saab/GM take...
