1. Is this a good deal?
I think so. I paid 36,800 for my 2001. They aren't discounting the Viggens, unfortunately.
2. What incentives are available for a Viggen purchase (eg. Maintenance, Loaner Car, accessories, etc.)?
The place I bought it has loaner cars. I did not get any incentive for accessories, although there are places that sell Saab accessories for 15% below list.
3. Are there any good and proven after market engine performance mods that are available for the Viggen?
I am going to buy the Viggen Rescue Kit (see http://www.abbottracing.com). Sometimes, the torque steer/camber steer/Viggen dance can be a bit too much fun for my tastes. I am also going to buy Koni shocks and perhaps (although this will be a while) an ECU upgrade. There are other upgraders than Abbott, although Abbott's stuff seems to be a bit easier to find in the US.
4. I was very surprised to see that the acceleration times for the Viggen, in a recent Motor Trend magazine comparison, were as slow as they were. I expected the Viggen to out accelerate the Volvo S60 T5, Acura TL Type S, and inch out the BMW 330i. In a real situation, on the street, can the Viggen take these cars from 30 mph and up?
It should be able to at least be competitive with these cars. First gear is geared low and is torque limited. Also, second gear has the most torque steer in my car, and can be challenging at times. It's also torque limited. Once your out of these gears, the car is very fast. I personally don't race other cars, so I wouldn't know if they can actually be beat. Also, I'd give the transmission a B to B-, and some of the speed detriment of the Saab is due to the length of time it takes to shift gears. It's relatively slow.
5. Finally, I am interested about any reliability or quality issues that you have experienced?
I've owned my car almost 4 months now, but 72 days of that it was in the shop because I was rear-ended. I've driven it almost 3,500 miles in the about 1.5 months I've actually been able to drive it. I've had no problems so far.
My only dislikes about the car are the torque steer, the vague shifting of the transmission, and the suspension is a bit too rough at times. The times I notice the TS is when hammering in 2cnd or on uneven roads. The transmission seems to shift fine at times and poorly at other times. I'm not sure why. Similarly, the suspension is bothersome when hitting expansion joints that are spaced every 10 feet but nice when smoking down some twisty road.
