Might try on a whim contacting a local network cabling installer that handles fiber optics.
As noted it is possible to properly cut & polish ends back onto connectors for the best results. I know there are newer connectors that do not require the polishing (a clean cut with a special snip and insertion into a special gel in the connector, pretty handy) but since it would prove hard to figure out the signal quality and data rate required by the SAAB fiber those might not work.
I think I'd have to suck it up and head to the dealer though knowing that if any warranty claims came on down the road they could very well receive the big VOID on warranty coverage if this fiber plays any part in the situation.
Has anybody figured out what info is carried on the fiber backbone in the 9-3? Is it system inclusive or just functional to a specific area of the car? Would be interesting to see what the data is and what one could pull out of it (Put my fiber switch in there and mirror a port out to my laptop? Hmmm.....).
