Hi Trident,
I am affraid you will have to believe us in this case. The AMP fitted to your car receives its "on signal", together with all the various equaliser settings over the MOST bus as previously described.
As far as we know (and we designed the thing :-) ), there is no +12v signal to tell you that the radio is on. It is all handled by network messages now.
We at Saab TDC are not in the business of telling people how to "Bodge" their cars. I am sure you can respect this from a liability point of view.
I am sorry, but we will have to refer you to your Saab dealer in this case...
Perhaps you can tell them what you are trying to achieve and they can help you...?
As for the "quick fix", the splice you have made into the most fibre will effect the optical power of the light at the receiving end. In simple terms, if the light is not bright enough, then the receiever will not be able to see the messages being sent on the network bus and your system will stop working.
Optical fibres are delicate things and even something as simple as a sharp bend in the fibre will reduce the optical power. We at Saab acknowledge this and have a reasonable tolerance on the light power. However, without seeing exactly what you've done, we can not say how bad the problem is. Your actions will definitely have reduced the amount of light being received, but obviously at the moment, you are still receiving enough light to make the system work. Optical fibres do degrade over time and this will obviously have an adverse effect on a weakened system. Again, without knowing the exact extent of the damage we can not say how long your system will work.
Once again, we suggest you have your dealer check the damage to the fibre and decide whether it is necessary to replace a complete section of the harness, or fix the damage.
Cars a complicated things these days and gone are the days when the customer could easily modify the existing set up...
As a moral to this story - While we recommend never changing a cars existing set up, we respect the fact we can not stop the curious. In future, please consult your dealer for advice before hacking into your car. The wiring harness of a car can be seen as the car's nervous system so to speak, that should only be operated on by professionals who know what they are doing. Lets be honest, would you trust me to tap into your nervous system? I thought not... :-)
Hope this clears matters up
Sorry,
James.
