DI Cassette -- scope of the problem Posted by Paul [Email] (#792) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Paul) on Wed, 24 Sep 2003 21:32:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Everyone knows that there have been DI Cassette failures. Consumer Reports says 2 to 5% for '99-'00, and less than 2% for '01 as of April 2003. Those numbers rate very well relative to other cars for the ignition category. My dealer suggested that some failures might be associated with non-original equipment spark plugs. I am trying to decide if I should carry a spare. My bottom line is I think it's ridiculous that we should all be paying $300 to carry a spare. If it really is a problem that warrants carrying a spare (supposing it's as necessary as a spare tire), then shouldn't Saab provide this, at least to original owners? Thes cars aren't cheap in the first place. I've never heard of a modern car having such an achilles heal, if it is really as bad as it sounds on this board.
My questions:
1. What percentage really go out?
2. Does this board tend to make the problem seem bigger than it is?
3. Is it caused by the wrong spark plugs?
4. Does the lifetime depend more on miles or on number of starts?
5. Why shouldn't Saab provide a spare?
6. Are there safety issues that should invoke a recall and permanent fix?
I love my 2001 SE, 25K miles, and I want to enjoy it for a long time.
