Lots of good points made by all these guys Paul. I certainly have thought about getting a back-up for my 99 9-3 but I don't think I will because:
1) The dang thing will probably go when my wife has the car and I'm out of town.
2) I'm an idiot and don't truct myself to fix anything on a car with a tool more complicated than a hammer.
2) We rarely take the car out of the Twin Cities. So my good ol Saab mechanic (non-dealer) is close by.
3) Who doesn't enjoy a little towing adventure now and then.
For what its worth, my mechanic said he has seen them go at 20,000, 40,000, 60,000, etc. to never go. Crapshoot.
Whether this BB makes problems seem more common or no I do not know. But I do know it has helped me get a new head gasket and temp control box replaced under warranty. I would have never known what to "tell the dealer to do" without this post.
Can't wait to smell the burnt plastic smell.......
