My thanks to all who have contributed their knowledge and experience. I have learned some useful things. Beyond finding out just how frustratingly short the specialty bulbs can last, I now know that H4, HB2 and 9003 bulbs are supposed to be physically the same in filament placement and base design, with the caveat that 9003 are the bulbs that meet the more stringent DOT approval for filiment placement and, maybe, limited lumens. I have known for a long time that some H4s are brighter than what DOT allows -- those are the non-DOT "motorcycle" variety that I have used in my Miata E-code housing for years now. However, there is still precious little out there that gives actual lumen measurements on most bulbs to make any kind of informed choice. The numbers cited by REM in Seattle at 9003 =HB2=H4 bulb...., below, were the best clue. If Lumens are a linear unit, increases in lumens over a kind of "standard" 1500 on high beam are not great. When the amount of light we need to see as well at night as a 20 year does DOUBLES every decade or so, getting 10 or 20% more light is something, but not that much. How less than 30% more lumens results in 30% more light on the road is still a little mysterious.
Again, my thanks to everyone who contributed, and my apologies to anyone I may have offended. DER
