The use of a drum brake for the parking brake makes the disc brake calipers simpler and less expensive. The drum parking brake design is used by Afa-Romeo as well.
Obvoiusly the parking brake pads should never wear out as they are only used in the static state (no rotation).
The front disc brake pads on my 1998 900SET had wear indictors (basically a metal piece to rub on the disc when the pad is worn down to a certain point). The rear disc pads had no wear indicator.
