If the oil is getting past the pistons, then I would suspect oil control rings. You would not have to see smoke.

The valve cover is vented by a large diameter hose to the intake, between the air filter and the turbo. So I cannot see pressure building up. If the orifice in the throttle body that vents these gases while under engine vacuum was plugged, you still would not get a pressure.

I vote for the oil addative before investing in shop labour. I have seen these products work. I used to be very doubtful about such things. My brother had a V8 that was starting to smoke badly. He got quotes from various places that wanted to rebuild the engine. Yes, megbucks! So we went to CTC and used a can of Winns, and he called me a few days later to tell me that the oil burning and excessive oil consumption was fixed. Cost, a few bucks and a beer for me as I watched him pour it in. A friend who really took good car of his vehicles was concerned that he had started to detect a persistant, small oil consumption, when he had perviously never been able to detect consumption between oil changes. Told him about my brothers experience. He called a couple of months later, conviced that the snake oil had eliminated his oil consumption. I had a overhead valve lawnmower, and was changing its oil, and had a 1/2 liter of sythetic oil on the shelf and used it. Soon after its exhaust started to smell of synthetic oil, then after a few months, this tapered off. Conclusion, the synthetic removed depostits and the rings then loosened up and reseated themselves. So I no longer automatically go for mechanical repairs. If you do a leak down test and find a minor indication, you first course of action would be to try a chemical treatment before tearing down the engine.
