You can see the throwout bearing through the window in the trans housing. Have someone push on the pedal and see what happens. don't discount the cable just because you see some movement when the pedal is depressed, it might not be enough movement. Without your foot on the pedal, go down to the actuator arm at the trans case where the cable is attached. If you try and move that arm, by hand, there should be very little or no movement. If that arm moves a lot chances are the self adjust on the cable has gone south.
If the fork that holds the throwout bearing (a shift fork is something else) has broken, or the bolt that holds it to the shaft has come out, you should be able to see the actuator shaft rotate through the little window but the bearing won't be moving.
