If it goes pop then it's your clutch cable. This happened to me at a stop sign off an Interstate, which wasn't too fun. I put the hazards on, ran out, pulled on the spring (I have small hands, so I can do it without removing the fuse box), felt it click, and was on my way.
Good luck, I would assume it's much cheaper to replace that than anything else.
