The correspondance is most certainly evidence, in fact it's a confession written by the defendant. I would write her back one last time...

Something like "I don't see how you correlate protecting your son with not making taking responsibility for the damage he has caused. I'm not a parent, but when I am, I will not expect my children to be faultless, just to make amends when they have done something wrong"

The point would be to get her more directly in incrimination of her son.

It was very foolish of her to take it up to this point and provide you with so much material, and then try to back out.
