always buckle up with the seatbelt and ensure all passengers are buckled up even before starting the car.
drive defensively (with a bit of offense) and as if every other driver on the road is an idiot and will do the unexpected
leave that 2 second gap with the car in front (when travelling at 60km/h) more at higher speeds
take as many advance driver training courses in your own car as possible. Ive done over 6 of them and still learn.
(applicable to learners) drive in as many different conditions as possible - sun, rain, wind, long journeys, short trips etc.
learn what to do at round abouts!!
learn how to do hook turns (applicable in Melbourne with the trams in town)
no need to speed as how much time do you really save? Sure you may be 5 minutes arriving early but you may risk your life. My motto... its often OK to arrive a little late than not arrive at all!

I am sure there are more... and will add to this.
steve :)
