My dad announced that it was time to learn how to drive when I was 14. I was stunned! Too young to even be seriously thinking about it.

We were on a fishing trip in Michigan in the early Spring. Our station wagon was a stick, so I had a few extra strokes to learn. Fortunately, I was driving about 10mph when the siren came up behind. The relief of finding that it was a fire truck rather that the cop I was sure knew I was driving too young. That relief quickly gave way to panic when I stepped on the brakes to pull over, and there were none. 10mph was a good speed, and the gravel on the shoulder slowed me quickly.

I spent that trip studying the rules of the road, and could have passed the test by the time I got home that weekend. I was a motivated student of driving styles and skills, and learned a lot in the two years before I was legal. I was also a captive listener to dad's advise. Not a bad way to get attention!

One more. On that trip we were driving a lot of Michigan's fine sand/gravel roads. At 10mph. At last my dad got exhasperated and told me that if I was not sliding a bit in the turns I was not going fast enough. I got pretty good at a four wheel drift around the corners. At some point dad must have regretted that advise, as I noticed some pretty tight grips on the handle. This expertise led me to Saab. I was in Vermont one summer as a student, and caught a ride over the mountain Marlboro. I thought I was pretty good at cornering, but the guy driving that 96 had the back end hanging off the edge of that gravel road several times. I was amazed at that car's ability. Now I'm on my 5th Saab.
