High school kids have beaters because they are cheap and it's a car to learn in not protect. Many high school kids don't have much to spend on a car or truck.
One of my 5 cars is a beater. Ten years ago, I bought my first saab as a third-hand (at least) used car from my brother with cash as primarily a winter vehicle. It's officially a beater now. I drive it well and take pride in driving well, but I'm not very concerned about others hitting me. It has lots of performance parts which I'd transfer to another vehicle if it got ruined in an accident or rust became too bad. It's nice to have a basically worthless car to tinker with since you have very little risk.
I do have a sparco seat in it which is good for my back, comfy, and I joke that it's worth more than the whole car.
The beater serves to let me garage my Viggen, Saab convertible, and Jag convertible for the winter. I also haul garbage, wood, and work supplies in this beater.
