There are two kinds of beaters;
1) The driver beats on their car and does not care for it much and treats it badly. This is probably the kind you are talking about. In this case it is the driver that causes it.
2) The driver has had the car for so long they have lost appreciation for it and use it as a truck. This is where I could fall into some day. In this case, just time and age have taken its toll so the driver uses this car when the car could be damaged, get extra dirty, etc. We use our 1999 9-3 as the family truck. I still get comments on how nice and shiny it looks so it is definitely not beater status yet. I think in this case folks lose appreciation for their cars when the newness wears off and feel its age and stop taking care of it once it breaks on them a couple of times. I got a Cutlass 442 and a Rabbit GTI both from people who were tired of fixing them and lost appreciation. I brought them back to life and enjoyed them. When they saw their cars again after I applied my TLC there was seller's remorse.
3) The third kind is the "extra car". Many of my friends have three cars; A family car, a toy car, and a transportation car. The transportation car is the one they use for point A to point B and drive in the rain, bad weather, etc. It's a car purchased knowing that it will be used in a utilitarian fashion. The toy car gets the most attention followed by the family car (minivan, etc) and then the transportation car. I think the transporation car gets "reactive maintenance" only.
