Different flavors and evolution...

There are beaters you buy when you're a kid and can't afford anything decent. Most of us have had those. They get worse over time as lack of maintenance and minor accidents take their toll.
Then there are beaters--known in the snow belt states as "winter rats"--that exist to keep the good car alive and nice longer. They have few requirements: good battery, good heat, will pass inspection, have snow tires. As long as they start and get you from A to B they are fine from November to March.
But eventually the good cars age, gain scars, change owners and evolve into beaters.
Other times a car is just kept around even as new cars are acquired. They get less and less attention over time, are driven in worse weather, aren't fixed when minor accidents occur, etc. They *become* beaters. I had an '84 C900 that went from new to second car to extra car (beater) over 20 years.
Finally, the more owners a car has, the faster it evolves into being a beater. Each pays less for it, inflicts their own damage and neglect and evolutionary process continues.
