It is much smoother and provides much better control, especially when driving fast on twisty roads or ice and snow. I never took a course in performance driving, but had read about the technique and also saw some movies and video of how race car drivers handle the steering wheel.
I began doing it on the street and then in high speed autocrosses where it made a big difference in control.
I taught my daughter the same thing, but in driver ed they teach shuffle steering--passing the wheel from hand to hand at the bottom in a turn. They say the full arc method is potentially dangerous because if your arms are crossed when you hit solid object they would be broken then the airbag goes off. Makes marginal sense, but I don't buy it.
