I have a '95 and '96 9000, both bought used at 138K and 90K respectively. Now have 145K and 128K. IN April we got an'03 Linear wagon (now at 45K).
The 9Ks are pretty reliable, given they are 10 and 11 years old. I do most of the work and the usual stuff has been dealt with. It's just normal maintenance and the stuff that dies on cars as they age. No biggie. I think my '96 is the best car I've ever owned. Hope to keep it a long time yet. I love the versatility of the hatch and the long haul comfort and that it is rock-solid in any weather.
The 9-5 is fine and under warranty and I like it a lot (wife's car). It is comfortable on trips, maybe a little less than the 9K, but still good. The 9K has better seats.
The 9ks and the 9-5 feel different, but are both perfectly good drivers in all conditions. The 9-5 is quieter, tighter, but is also much newer.
It's harder to find a good 9K, but they are worth looking for, as they are truly exceptional cars if well cared for. Under-valued in the market, too. Hunt carefully and know what you're looking at. The 9-5 is in some ways more of a risk, as they can have issues. If you go for one, '02 and up are safer, but try to get some kind of warranty and definitely see the service records.
Having both models, I can say I'm happy with either, and you might be too. My wife, who is not car-oriented, likes both types too.
