I'm not a 'union guy' but I'm not sure if the UAW is the main culprit in the demise of GM and the other big domestics.
I rent Avis which typically uses GM vehicles. Sure they've improved dramatically over the past 15 years but after sitting in the vehicle for several hours you begin to notice some of the inferior details (seating, selection of materials, controls, etc.) that keep their products from being perceived to be as good as Honda or Toyota. And it's management that makes the decision as to what goes into a vehicle, not the guy on the assembly line.
Some of the newer, better GM products are world-class (like the Acadia) and some are still crap like the Envoy (9-7X). It also appears GM's foreign divisions are creating cars the US market could use (Opel or Holden) but US management is reluctant to fast-track some of the best designs for use here (Saturn excepted).
Finally, the foreign makes are not infallible. I regularly see MBs and BMWs on flatbed towtrucks, and check out the rear side impact crash test rating on the newly-designed Accord (3-stars - crap!).
I don't like throwing good money after bad but letting GM and the others fail would take down a huge part of the economy with it (not to mention one of the last vestiges of our mfg base) and I dread the thought of having to drive a lame Toyota.
