Wasn't meant as a slam.... I had to leave in a hurry so my post didn't contain all the info that it probably should have. I was merely re-living the two trips I made across PA in the summer of 2005.
I can't remember which interstate we used (I think it was I-78 as were we going to/from Newark/NYC), but the absence of exits, limited number of fuel stations, and extremely limited restaurant options along the interstate were real.
Getting off the freeway and exploring the local towns may yield completely different results, but for driving across the state my observations were factual only four years ago.
The deadest expressway in MI is I-196 running North from the far southwest corner of the state to Holland then Grand rapids. It runs inland from all the resort towns bordering Lake Michigan, but don't start a trip on this road without a full tank of gas and empty bladders.
All states probably have their own Dead zone.
