The GN/GNX were typical American car maker thinking of the '60s, '70s, '80s and even the '90s. Going fast only counted in a straight line, preferably one a quarter mile long. So for that you build a quarter of a car: It accelerates great but doesn't turn right, left or stop worth a hoot. This one dimensional approach does not make them a good car, no matter how fast they were in a straight line. They might be memorable or even notable, but so are Yugos, Bricklins, Deloreans, Cosworth Vegas and the whole line of GM X-series cars.
With the turbo motor the GN/GNX might be significant if they had kept making them and kept improving them, as did Saab and Porsche with their turbo cars. And made them turn and stop, too. And if they were so significant how come they didn't do this?
I admit to 40 years of almost exclusive Euro car ownership and valuing handling, braking and durability over sheer muscle. Even back then there were less powerful cars that could say, go down a twisty mountain road --or around a road course-- a whole lot better than a GN.
But what would one expect of a Buick?
