It seems to me that cars like the C4 Corvette, Mustang GT, Camaro Z28 and even the Firebird TransAm or Taurus SHO had a lot more to do with "revitalizing interest in domestic performance cars" than the GN/GNX. But I question that any revitalization was needed. American car guys have always gravitated toward big iron and straight line performance, and have done the mods to get what they wanted out of whatever car they had. The interest was always there.
As for being thankful, I think not. American cars today are better than they used to be --in just about every way-- not because of increased interest in performance cars but because they had to compete with Japan and Europe as they watched their market share bleed away. This was just business, and performance cars (of any flavor) are still just targeting a fairly narrow market segment.
