I had a chance to experience the profound difference first-hand recently when I was shopping for a used "starter convertible" (like "starter home," where you can make all the common new owner mistakes before getting a real one). I initially had my sight set on a E46 323Ci/325Ci (2.5liter engine in both cases), which on paper should have similar power-to-weight ratio as my 2001 9-5 wagon. Yet in reality, it was night-and-day difference: power was non-existent below 3000rpm on the BMW 2.5liter. The ride quality was awesome for a convertible (or even by the standards of a car with a regular roof), yet where was the power? I didn't find any until the tachometer hit above 3000rpm, then the horses showed up for work. That's just not drivable for me in real life traffic; I was afraid of getting hit from behind even during the test drive. That first-hand experience sent me quickly into looking for a 9-3 convertible, which has nowhere nearly as nice a ride quality on bumpy roads but that instantaneous rush when I step on the gas can be a life saver, not to mention the grins :-)
