I have a low profile reel, and I don't like it because it is too low. That is, you have to bend over too far to roll up the cover. It hurts my back. I think I'd like a taller one, but then I'm concerned that a taller one might be less stable/more tippy if not well designed.

Also, with a low profile, you must reel up the blanket perfectly (easier said than done, at least for me) or else the roll is too big and it drags on the pool deck so either you leave it hanging in the pool or re-roll until you get it straight and tight enough to not drag on the ground.

It could just be that mine is falling apart so it harder to turn - I did replace the "bearings" (cheap plastic), but the new ones did not last very long... so whatever you buy, make sure it doesn't have cheap plastic bearings.

Also, you cannot leave a solar "blanket" (heavy duty bubble wrap type) out of the water in the sun. It gets too hot and the bubbles pop, then you have lots of small plastic disks in your skimmer, and the blanket doesn't float as well.

At this point, I've kind of given up on my solar cover. It worked great the first year, but then the next year was chilly so we left it on too much which caused water issues - cloudy water, but the chlorine is high - you must super chlorinate to fix (add $50-100 of chlorine and wait a week). Barely used it last year.

Maybe I'll get one of those fold-able hard covers :).
