I use granular lithium hypochlorite and a DE filter, I sprinkle it on the surface every few days. Solar cover is on about 22 hours a day, not a lot of sun. Electric heat pump, heat it for a few days to start the season in early June, then maybe once a week when the weather is bad to maintain at least 83 degrees. Heat it again at the end of the season, about 6 hours a day for a month until late Sept (New England). I shock it spring and fall, and maintain the water quality for calcium, alkalinity, and pH. In 11 years I have never had cloudy water, and have not had to add any water (I have had to let some out on occasion). I clean my 12 mil solar cover at the end of 3 seasons and at the end of the 4th it goes in the trash.
I think the key to a clean pool is to spend 5 minutes a day removing debris, and keep up with the water chemistry. We open it early and close it late, so little chance for algae growth. I was hoping a solar cover reel would allow me to remove the cover by myself, but I think I will just have to stick with my rules and never swim alone :)
