Not to hijack AeroLady's thread, but I pour the granular chlorine into the skimmer basket while the filter is running. Usually at the end of our swimming session, or every couple of days if the weather is not condusive to pool use.
The other way to fix the issue you are having is to partially pump down the pool and re-fill with fresh water. I don't know if this would be more or less expensive than the cost you quoted for the super chlorination treatment. Fresh water will drop the ppm of the stabilizer in your pool water and your chlorine will start working again. Too much stabilizer in the water results in not only the undesireable chlorine-sunlight reaction being inhibited, but also the desirable chlorine-biologicals sanitizing reaction is blocked.
