hardware/software is that controls these. Probably a lot. You make a really good point (and thanks for the link above), that other manufacturers don't have these numbers. there really should be no reason that the car needs to be on for the airbag to deploy. Lots of electronics can draw from the battery when the car is off.
Sounds like there are a number of engineering issues with those cars.
Fwiw, I drove a pontiac G4 (I think it was 4) rental back around 2008. Almost identical to the cobalt - you could basically swap tail lights, trim, etc. I think the metal work was the same. Badge engineering at its finest! Anyway, it was a cheap car, and I didn't care for it much... except... somehow the combination of gearing and engine was significantly more drivable than most Asian cars I have rented (including Mazda 5, several Subarus, Yaris, etc)... for a shoddy, cheapo car, it was not that bad. But it was still crap.
GM really should have done better.
