Difficult separating fact from fiction in the media Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 13 Apr 2014 08:15:11 In Reply to: They released a fixed part with the same PART NUMBER nm, Brian in MA, Fri, 11 Apr 2014 18:45:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Statements from early articles appear as if they are now being twisted in later articles.
IIRC from the early articles the ignition switch was revised by Delphi and Delphi did not change their part number for the switch which was being purchased by GM. Without having a Delphi P/N change GM may not have known until much later that the part had changed. Only the 20K pages of GM documents can sort this out.
Likewise the comments from one of the GM engineers under oath a few years ago. Original stories said he was asked if the part had been changed for the 2006 Model Year vehicles. He said it had not. Later revelations show the part was changed in the Spring of 2006 so the blood crazed media is reporting the engineer lied under oath. If the original story was true regarding the engineer's deposition, then his answer was also likely factual. Any part changed in the Spring of 2006 would most likely have been done as a modification for 2007 model year autos (entering production in August of 2006), or even the 2008 or later models.
Again, only review of case transcripts and internal documents can determine the truth.
Since GM has willingly thrown two engineers under the proverbial bus on this one, which stupidly incriminates GM as having no adequate internal controls in place regarding evaluation of components or their subsequent changes, I wonder how large the exodus of GM product designers to other automotive manufacturers will be?
