Cousins.... the Saab 9000 and Alfa 164 share the same (Tipo Quattro "Type 4") chassis co-developed by Saab and Fiat. Fiat put the Chroma sedan on it, Lancia (as already owned by Fiat) put the Thema on the platform. Saab put the 9000 on the platform. When Fiat bought Alfa, it chose the existing and well sorted platform to put the 164 on, and in my humble opinion Alfa did the best job with the platform and powertrains, with the exception perhaps of the 9000 Aero. I had a '91 164 Base for 7 years, best car I ever had. I also had 3 Spiders, a '75 project car, a '91 Veloce, and a '89 Veloce, all the Spiders were very good cars. Alfas are great if you are proactive and stay with or exceed maintenance. We now have a 2001 Saab 9-5 Aero, a 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano Silver, a 1991 Alfa Romeo 164S, and a 2001 Audi TT 225 quattro roadster... It's interesting that Fiat and Saab will now be cooperating again on engines and that a Swede was named head of the powertrain division of GM's high end marque grouping... If the next Alfas that come to the US have Alfa engines or even Saab-derived turbos (hey, how about a twin-turbo Alfa 3.0L 24V V6 with Saab turbo-tuning ? woah mama,,,I'm there.... now, if GM can properly market whatever Alfas come, that will remain to be seen. At least GM seems to be allowing Saab to remain and to the uneducated car-buyer "Swedish". Saab needs some help in the marketing department though, some commercials or print ads featuring the Saab Race of Champions AWD turbo beast would be a good start ;-)
