They sell very good cars at very, very good (from their point of view) prices, to a populace who think BMW's are the cat's meow. My own (limited, which I expect it to remain) experience at a BMW dealer (an employee owned company even) left me with the feeling that my money was worth far more to me than it was to them. They know they can sell whatever cars they get their hands on. I asked if I could take a look at a 325i, but apparently none was available (and this is their best-selling model!), but the salesman was generous enough to offer to order one for me, for delivery at some unspecified time in the future (he hoped it would be about 3 months, couldn't be sure...)
Not a BMW dealer, but an interesting story....
I know somebody who is an earthwork contractor. One day an engineer drove onto a site he was working on in a (then) new model Cadillac. The contractor thought the car was incredible (!!), hopped off his $500k excavator, and drove his pickup truck to the nearest Cadillac dealer to place an order! Because of his appearance (mud-covered excavator driver with a scruffy pickup truck), nobody would talk to him, other than to say, 'you know, these cars are VERY expensive...'!!!!! He went to another dealer, ordered the car he wanted, had it delivered to the first dealer, and paid with $100 bills...
