Annually (CBC radio report today) subsidies to the hydrocarbon business run to $300B. Consumers already pay taxes to get the stuff out of the ground and pay at the pumps.
So you raise 'em again to cover damages and remedial programs as well as off-hydrocarbon programs? IMO, continuing with both forms of subsidy sends a mixed message.
All the off-hydrocarbon bunch wants is a level playing field. The wind power people were favourable on Bush's energy program but good news is written once, then promptly forgotten. Texas has more wind power than all of Canada.
Follow the money. Is there a single major auto manufacturer which is not pursuing an off-hydrcarbon initiative of one form or another? I think not.
We're in a transition period, pure 'n simple. Shell says its one of a 20 year duration during which engine-power alternatives will be presented which will test for market convenience (where you get the fuel and how you recyle that which needs recycling).
