Puts the police in an odd situation Posted by Gerry [Email] (#1840) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gerry) on Thu, 23 Aug 2001 14:03:53 In Reply to: I hate this stuff: Sweden tests new system that blocks speeding., Coolknight, Thu, 23 Aug 2001 06:53:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
They have to be in favor of this, since it increases 'public safety'. Then again, it will seriously decrease the amount of 'revenue' they earn while writing tickets, so they will privately oppose it. After all, speeding tickets are a source of revenue world wide and all the police departments use it as an offset to the cost of new officers ie., 'yes, it will cost 38K for a new officer but he'll bring in 15K in ticket revenue so it really only costs 23K and you put another officer on the street to watch for crime" (They always seem to forget that if the officers spends 90% of his time writing tickets that he isn't preventing much other crime AND that the purpose of speeding enforcement is not supposed to be the generation of city revenue.)
It will be interesting to see their statements. I predict something like "we see this as a positive step but it is not necessarilly the best way to
blah, blah, blah".
I wonder how long it will be before they propose giving cops devices to shut your engine down then they decide you need to be pulled over. I wonder if the overly conservative Supreme Court in ths US will decide this is another valid violation of our rights in order to 'protect the public safety'.
