I'd shy away from the SMG, very clunky and jerky around town. Actually had a 645 Coupe deal unwind because the SMG made the wife sick around town.
Overall BMW's score is one point higher than Saab in the latest JD Powers Vehicle Dependability Study, and above average, but you can have a nightmare (and post it on a BB) with any brand, higher sales, more nightmares.
If I were a BMW or MBZ salesperson I'd pick on Saab resale too as those brands and in particular a 3 series do the best statistically. Lies, damn lies and statistics, I think Mark Twain said, anyway pay $10k more for a BMW/MBZ and it'll be worth $5k more in 3-5 years. Don't kid yourself, any 3 year old car is worth roughly half of what you paid for it in trade. True the BMW/MBZ's are indeed more popular and do have a seeming statistical and probably a slight short term actual advantage, but your overall depreciation in actual dollars, as well as your initial investment, will be less for the equivalent Saab.
For $37k, I'd blow the doors off a 330 SMG with any Saab 9-5 Aero and put several thousand large back in my pocket too.
