I am pretty sure the Liberty uses a proper transfer case. It has its own oil supply, and could be leaking from input or either output, or possibly (I think) between its two halves. There isn't much oil in a transfer case, so if there was a leak it could be empty now or at a low enough level where it isn't leaking anymore. There should be a drain plug and a fill/level plug a couple inches higher. Usually just a square-drive or allen plug on each. It's 5 minutes to check, and 15 minutes to drain/refill. I'd do that if there is any doubt. I am guessing there is a quart or two of fluid in there at most, $20 at an auto parts store. Then you'll know for sure.
