One of the things that I see is that the tune brings out any problems with the car that were weak, they may not show up under stock boost pressures and when you tune the car, all the weak components come to the surface, this can be weak coils or DI or spark plugs or leaking IC clamps, worn vacuum lines, bad airmass meter, etc.
When I get a T7 car to tune, I like to go over all IC clamps, I do not look at them and say, looks good, I actually jack the car up and put a 7mm socket or wrench on each clamp and tighten them all. I start at the turbo and work my way all the way around to the intake. I zip tie the C line at the turbo, often loose, I change all worn brittle vacuum lines with silicone. I check the notorious leaking check valve on the intake manifold on the drivers side. I put in a brand new set of ngk bcpr 7es plugs, they are heat range colder and the gap is tight to avoid quench.
The airmass meter on these T7 cars is the main reason for most prolems with hesitation and poor drivability. We are looking at these as a maintenance item, every 60k or every 3 years and that will take care of many potential problems.
When all these are done first, the problems with tuning are minimal, most cars run very well once the maintenance items have been updated. There are also different levels with me, does not have to be balls to the walls, can be mild too. I know some tuners tune for a higher octane, B at 94 octane, so that can cause some issues in the USA. T7 cars can be tricky, I have seen some cars run different on the same sw, sometimes different cars have to be tuned different and that is an option for some...
When the cars are updated and ready for a tune and the tune is of good quality, then the end results can be a very positive one. When there is nothing done to the maintenance of the car and a tune is just thrown on there, the end result can be less than a happy one in many cases. There is a method to the whole process and doing certain things can greatly increase the chances of a good experience !
My thoughts,
JZ
