It sounds way too stressful.

That fact that these drivers tailgate you even more when you slow down, instead of passing, proves they're not in a hurry, just jerks.

And it's all too easy to be provoked by jerks. The thing that has helped me chill out in similar situations is asking myself if I'd like to get to know that person better, perhaps through months or years of legal wrangling. Probably not.

I'm with you, Aaron, on the tailgating thing. It's got to be one of the more dangerous things to do. When I have my kids in the back, it really pisses me off. Sometimes I wish for a couple of small Teflon tubes at the back of my car which squirt sulfuric acid, but then I'm sure some would get on my car also, and, well... can't have that. If only the cops would take this problem seriously. It's assault with a deadly weapon. I think every SUV should come with a device which cuts out the ignition when you follow too close. Also the Ford Taurus/M. Marquis and Pontiac Bonneville (late model). Or maybe it should be region-specific. In New England, the Subarus are particularly bad (because, as we all know, 4WD helps you brake better).

Here in the midwest we have people who tailgate in heavy fog. I'll bet you have those in the Pacific NW, too. On I-74 in Illinois about 8 or 9 years ago, there was a pile-up just east of Champaign in heavy fog, in which car after car continued to slam into the growing pile. Cars were even deposited on top of the pile. An entire family from China (grad student family, I think) ended up on top of the pile, trapped in their car, and bystanders said they could hear their screams as they burned to death.

best regards, and stay safe.
