Unfortunately, the majority of drivers I see on the road these days do not excercise it. I have no great love of computers telling you what to do, but operating an automobile is one of the most potentially dangerous things you can do (statistically as well, I believe), yet many {Americans} treat it as a god-given right and use their car as they would any common household appliance.
We have mandates that automakers include a seat belt warning system of some kind, and most automakers have some sort of ding or buzzer that lets you know when a door is open.
I'll grant you, that including these devices is probably unlikely to change the behavior of drivers who've been using the same bad practices over many years. However, I would venture a guess that the amount of people wearing their seatbelts, particularly younger folk, has risen dramatically since the mid 70's in America.
What's needed is a system as in Europe, which much more thorough and strict driver education. To my knowledge, nobody is working to create such a system in the States.. Pity, as many people are obviously too lazy to take on the job of educating themselves when it comes to driving.
