The factories have set it up for safety, not performance. It kicks in way too quick allowing for no slip. In it's stock form, I agree it would not help in racing; much too conservative and slow to react (and disengage). They designed it for worst conditions like ice. However, a computer can modulate the throttle much quicker than you ever could. Racing teams do use traction control when allowed; they just tune it for the car and track conditions. A slipping tire isn't very effective at getting the power to the ground. A tire that is just on the edge of slipping will gain you the most traction and be quicker. Great drivers know where this threshold is and can maintain close to the edge of traction. Most of us aren't "great drivers" and a well set up traction control is a equalizer. Traction contol becomes more important as you try and control higher horsepower. It even more of a help when you have a high horsepower, LSD, front-wheel drive; since if you lose traction on your drive wheels, you also lose traction on your steering.
One such programmable system is the RaceLogic. (just illegal in my racing class for a reason).. Lot's of data and info on traction control and why it's a good thing.

I've been trying to figure out how to work within the rules and use the "stock" (just reprogrammed) traction control from the factory.
