Say all cars are geared for the same top speed - 155 mph or so, and for simplification I assume they make peak power near/at redline.
RX8- 9000 rpm redline
Saab - 6000 rpm redline
Big fat TDI engine - 4000 rpm redline
To achieve same top speed as Saab, the rotary engine has 1.5x shorter overall gearing than Saab, and the big fat TDI engine (say a 3.0 liter Audi V6) has 1.5x longer overall gearing. Compared to the Saab, torque at the wheels will be multiplied by 1.5x from flywheel torque in case of the RX8, and divided by 1.5 in case of the diesel. Do that with root mean square torque of the respective engines and you should see similar numbers for similar acceleration.
Equation solved ;-)
